Job Description

We ensure that financial services businesses such as banks, investment firms, financial advisors and insurers are well-regulated. Ensuring firms treat customers fairly, customers have access to a range of financial services as a result of competition in the market, and there are appropriate remedies in place when things go wrong.
You will also be responsible to the government’s overall strategy for protecting consumers from high-risk investments, an issue that has risen further up the agenda as consumers look to non-standard investments to make returns that will keep up with inflation. This will include working with the FCA to develop a robust framework for financial promotions that balances objectives around consumer protection with those to encourage consumers to invest more in appropriate vehicles.
The post is therefore ideally suited to individuals with proven experience in policy making, setting strategic direction and stakeholder handling, and who wish further develop these skills in this stretching role.

Responsibilities

  • Set government’s overall strategic direction for the asset management sector
  • Deliver on the government’s domestic priorities for the sector, including those that cement and grow the UK’s status as a global hub for asset management.
  • Implement the new equivalence framework for recognizing overseas funds marketing into the UK (the Overseas Funds Regime) and support international trade negotiations.
  • Provide strategic direction and coordination across financial services group for policies related to high-risk investment, as well as leading on the regulation of financial promotions and of so-called ‘minibonds’.
  • Provide asset management-related input into the government’s work to increase the supply of productive finance to the UK economy, including through the roll out of the new Long Term Asset Fund structure.
  • Lead engagement with senior asset management stakeholders, including through the ministerial Asset Management Taskforce.
  • Line management responsibility for 3 ‘Range E’s (Grade 7 equivalent grade)

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to oversee a team that operates in a high-profile and developing policy area, ensuring that the team maintains momentum and morale, stays on track to deliver a broad range of outputs, and identifies and addresses problems where needed (Leadership).
  • Ability to develop an excellent understanding of the policy context, including technical detail and draw on a range of information to evaluate, prioritise and make decisions
  • Ability to establish effective relationships to support delivery, including with senior figures in government, regulators and industry, with different roles and perspectives
