Full Time
Job Description

The Domestic Bursar will be an Official Fellow, a member of the Governing Body and one of the most senior College Officers and will report to the Principal. Their primary responsibility is the operation and efficient (and profitable) running of the facilities and domestic services of the College, which are relied on by Fellows, students, staff, visitors, conference guests and others. The successful candidate will need to get to know the College, culture and the environment at the outset and be able to assimilate the values of the College, to become familiar with the way in which decisions are made and to take time to understand the interests and concerns of the Fellows, students and staff.

Crucial to fulfilling this role is a combination of strategic planning, effective execution, and a well-judged collaborative approach in formulating and implementing College policy in respect of our domestic operations.

The post holder will be responsible for approximately 120 non-academic staff and be a member of a wide range of committees concerned with the College’s operations and framework. In addition, the Domestic Bursar will represent the College at relevant Conference of Colleges and University meetings (e.g., Domestic Bursars’ Committee) and report back on matters of note as required.

The College is currently engaged in planning and implementing a number of very substantial projects including new buildings at its site. The post holder shares, with the Finance Bursar, the responsibilities for those projects.

In return, we can offer a competitive salary (dependent on experience) plus a Housing Allowance, up to 38 days annual leave, private medical insurance, membership of the Senior Common Room entitling the post holder to take meals at Common Table and membership of the Universities Superannuation Scheme.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The successful candidate will have a strategic approach to planning and effective execution in order to achieve results. They should be able to manage a large number of diverse problems and get to grips with underlying issues quickly whilst negotiating solutions sensitively. They must have a combination of extensive operational leadership together with a sound commercial outlook balanced by an appreciation of the values and priorities of a college with a strong academic mission. Strong financial, budget and procurement acumen together with experience of contract negotiation are essential requirements of the role.
