Job Description

The position is primarily concerned with assessing, monitoring and managing corporate credit risk inherent to the operations of the bank's European and Asian lending business, along with associated derivative exposures and other ancillary activities. This will include transactional approvals driven by new business deal flow as well as periodic reviews of existing portfolio exposure.

Main Objectives and responsibilities:

  • Carry out thorough analysis of credit applications from Corporate Banking, develop and present clear objective recommendations to senior management within the team, or at higher levels within the bank, to enable credit judgments to be made. In time, gain and exercise individual lending authority.
  • Currently approved strategic focus in Europe on Infrastructure, Energy and Mining as well as supporting relationships to Canadian corporates wishing to operate in Europe, though work on expansion of this mandate is currently underway.
  • Review and monitor credit risk in the existing corporate portfolio and ensure that risk ratings are up to date and accurate and that such risks are properly identified and managed.
  • Ensure early identification of developing risk issues are promptly communicated to management.
  • Monitor developments across specific industry sectors, identifying major risk factors and investigate any adverse developments that may affect portfolio.
  • Advise on actions to mitigate these where possible, and/or escalate where necessary.
  • Present up the chain on portfolio risks where relevant. 
  • Assist in maintaining a constructive partnership relationship with CB and wider lines of business in order to support them in achieving their strategic plans.
  • Provide input into new strategic initiatives as they arise.
  • Effectively liaise with, and provide guidance to, the business on credit related matters and policy.
  • Assist in instilling a strong credit culture through gaining a clear understanding of the risk appetite, culture and risk governance of company and further ensure compliance with credit policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide input into policy groups' consideration of risk management trends and emerging requirements.
  • Develop a clear knowledge of our systems, policies, procedures and sectors of operation.
  • Assist in risk reporting activities where required and contribute to general governance controls and monitoring.
  • Special projects as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Educated to degree level with a minimum of 8/10 years' experience gained in a corporate banking and/or risk management environment in a large multinational financial institution
  • Experience of lending across multiple industries throughout Europe required, ideally with some exposure to mining, energy and/or infrastructure sectors, and covering both investment grade and non-investment grade corporates.
  • Direct workout or recovery experience an advantage.
  • Good understanding of industry and global economic environment with ability to analyze emerging risks.
  • Strong grasp of capital markets products including derivative transactions.
  • Familiarity with techniques for quantification and measurement of counterparty credit risk, as well as underlying documentation.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, to support credit recommendations and justify decisions reached.
  • Ability to convey risk boundaries and decisions effectively to the business line.
  • Self-motivated and flexible approach with strong initiative and integrity.
  • Ability to manage and resolve conflicting objectives and priorities to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent attention to detail and forensic approach to identify risk issues and think creatively and strategically on how best to mitigate them.
  • Adaptable and conscientious manner with ability to form independent clear conclusions and recommendations promptly, and consult with senior colleagues when necessary.
  • Good working knowledge of external financial and regulatory environment from a risk perspective.
  • Knowledge of European regulatory and legal systems.
  • Proficiency with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook as well as other modern business software and technology.
  • Foreign languages an advantage
