Job Description

As Head of Contracts for Difference (CfD) Account & Contract Management, you will be responsible for supporting the Director of Scheme Delivery with building, developing and providing strong commercial leadership to the team of CfD contract managers.

You will have responsibility for the successful planning, delivery, and implementation of the CfD schemes, including working closely with the Scheme Development team to support the drive for continuous improvement in the annual Allocation Round process. You will also be responsible for developing and maintaining excellent external stakeholder relationships, with a primary focus on the generators who are the counterparties to the CfD contracts.

You will also work closely with the other Scheme Delivery Head(s) and other Heads of across the business, particularly in relation to Scheme Development / Change, and New Business; to build excellent working relationships / networks and develop a commercial view of emerging contractual issues to identify improvements across the portfolio of CfD’s.
Key Responsibilities

Account and Relationship Management

  • Create an account management, contract, and relationship leadership based approach for the CfD team to follow and implement.
  • Ensure relationships and communication routes are developed and managed at all levels within the generator organisation.
  • Enable the resolution of issues related to the CfD contracts by methods other than formal contractual interactions, if appropriate.
  • Hold regular face-to-face and Teams meetings with generators on an individual CfD contract and portfolio basis.
  • Ensure the CfD team and generator counterparties comply with the formal requirements of the CfD contracts.
  • Develop , improve and maintain relationships with all external stakeholders including government, industry bodies, and generators and improve engagement level scores.
  • Support and engender investor confidence in the CfD scheme.

Contract Management

  • Support the Director of Scheme Delivery in managing the portfolio of CfD contracts.
  • Day-to-day oversight of all the contract managers and assign CfD contracts and associated workload / tasks appropriately across the team to ensure priorities are met and a value for money based approach.
  • Lead the team managing all contractual processes and issues, including actively identifying and resolving potential disputes by working with the Legal team.
  • Provide expert commercial advice and support on CfD’s including any emerging issues, and provide support as required on impact assessments.
  • Act as the senior contact and escalation point for contractual and commercial issues involving the CfD’s and the generators.
  • Work closely with the Scheme Development team to ensure that all contractual issues and suggested improvements across the portfolio of CfDs are captured and implemented in line with company’s internal change delivery process.
  • Support generators to ensure all contractual requirements are satisfied.
  • Ensure, working with the Legal team, that there is a controlled and documented risk approach to CfD delivery and preparation for wider economic risks.
  • Manage the generator monthly reporting cycle and provide generator reporting to the Scheme Operations team.
  • Ensure ongoing contract compliance such as managing FMS, RQM monitoring and reporting, and managing the Sustainability Criteria.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve high quality guidance documentation supporting generators through their CfD journey.

Team Management

  • Lead, develop and motivate the team of CfD contract managers by setting a clear vision for the team, ensuring a culture consistent with that of the wider team.
  • Demonstrates visible and strong leadership, utilizing the appropriate mix of persuasion, influence, and management.
  • Set clear expectations and goals for the team, including ways of working within the team and with other parts of company.
  • Create an environment with trusted and motivated colleagues, empowering individuals to take ownership of issues and deliver beneficial change.
  • Drive employee engagement levels within the team.
  • Provide ongoing support for direct reports by appropriate people management activities, including but not limited to; regular 1:2:1 meetings, objective setting, performance reviews, and mentoring.
  • Understand the ambitions of the team and its members and help to develop the skills and knowledge of the CfD contract managers.
  • Work with other Heads of, both inside and outside of the Scheme Delivery directorate, to identify opportunities for CfD contract managers to work in cross functional roles supporting other teams.

Delivery of Allocation Rounds

  • Support the Director of Scheme Delivery in managing the delivery of the new portfolio of CfD’s, including developing procedures for new technologies.
  • Support the Scheme Development team in the day-to-day delivery of the annual CfD Allocation Rounds and other similar initiatives. This will include the planning and delivery of the Initial Conditions Precedent, working with other parts of the business in a commercial and collegiate manner, identifying and implementing lessons learned to streamline the process year-on-year.
  • Work closely with other Heads of within company to support opportunities to influence and shape the future CfD scheme design.
  • Support the implementation of contract arrangements for new decarburization schemes within the envelope of the CfD’s.
  • Keep appraised of key activities / trends in the renewables industry.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • At least 5 years of leadership within the commercial sector
  • At least 5 years’ experience in contract management
  • Handling a portfolio of large scale and complex contracts including managing disputes, ideally in energy / infrastructure.
  • Proven commercial and contractual negotiation experience.
  • Developing, maintaining and improving excellent relationships with key suppliers and external stakeholders, including leading stakeholder events.
  • Priorities and flex focus in an impartial way, depending on business need and balancing the relevant commercial, policy, technology and legal risks and benefits.
  • Innovate and generate ideas on potential future scheme improvements.
  • Generate continuous improvement to internal processes to generate efficiencies and share lessons with the wider business.
  • Knowledge of the CfD scheme
  • Public sector experience
  • Knowledge of the current: UK energy policy landscape and regulations; UK power generation; and renewables sector
