Job Description

The management of risk is essential to the delivery and achievement of company's strategy. With a global presence and large, varied, and often complex operations, the risks we face are significant and wide-ranging. This requires an on-going need to develop and embed Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) in all areas of the organization.

The Head of Risk provides strategic and professional leadership of risk management ensuring effective integration of risk within corporate planning and the implementation of the company’s Enterprise Risk Management Framework. This will include:

  • Taking functional ownership of our risk strategy, framework, and protocols on behalf of the Board of Trustees
  • Supporting the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and Board of Trustees in the identification, assessment, tracking, and response of the organization’s principal strategic risks
  • Providing risk reporting to SLT, Audit & Risk Committee, and Board of Trustees, to provide assurance regarding risk oversight and mitigation
  • Championing a mature, risk-aware culture globally
  • Identifying opportunities and solutions for better managing risks
  • Innovation and thought-leadership in risk management, with continuous improvement and maturing of the ERM framework
  • Expert professional guidance and advice across the organization

Main Accountabilities:

  • Lead the development and implementation of risk management strategy, policy, framework, and protocols
  • Be an advocate for, and continually promote, a risk aware culture
  • Provide professional leadership and line management of the Risk team including management of the budget, headcount and financial controls
  • Line management support of the Head of Insurance in providing organizational leadership on all insurance related matters
  • Oversee the development of risk management training and communications and coordinate a network of risk focal points (Risk Champions)
  • Embed good-practice risk management in organizational activities, including planning and performance review mechanisms
  • Work with Business Units to ensure effective risk management is embedded into the development and delivery of operational projects
  • Support SLT and Board of Trustees in developing a comprehensive and practical Statement of Risk Appetite
  • Lead and facilitate risk workshops with leadership across the organization
  • Lead the review, assessment, and tracking of organizations Principle Risks on behalf of the Board of Trustees and SLT, and monitor progress on the management of strategic risks
  • Ensure effective alignment between Governance, Risk Management and Internal Audit. Liaise with other compliance and risk management functions, including Internal Audit, Compliance, Counter-Fraud, Legal, Safeguarding, Information Governance and Risk Management (IGRM).
  • Influence and drive change in ways of working, governance, and behaviors in response to new and emerging risk areas
  • Develop and maintain a strong internal and external professional network
  • Oversee and lead the development of the risk reporting framework
  • Provide advice to senior stakeholders on risk management including SLT and Board of Trustees
  • Lead reviews of major risk areas
  • Attend and present at the Audit & Risk Committee and support the development of the agenda and work plan
  • Enhance the use of data and analytics in risk management, including the development of Key-Risk-Indicators (KRIs)
  • Keep abreast of developments and trends in risk management to maintain best practice and identify opportunities for improvement

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Significant Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) expertise
  • Experience working in an international (matrix) organization
  • Experience of leadership of senior professionals
  • Reporting and engaging effectively with Board Committees 
  • Proven experience of analyzing complex data.
  • Working knowledge of a broad spectrum of risk areas including Insurance, BCP, Information Security, Fraud, Health & Safety, and Safeguarding
  • Experience working with arts, education, and culture, or within the charitable sector
  • Experience of business partnering and securing buy-in from business stakeholders
