Job Description

To work with the CEO and Trustee Board to assist in ensuring that the charity is governed in an appropriate way to the benefit of all stakeholders. Ensuring that the charity meets its legislative requirements. This role is responsible for reporting to and attending trustee board meetings and relevant trustee sub committees.
Manages a small finance team and a team of administrators/ reception staff and any other relevant contractors/freelancers
Finance: To manage the charity's financial affairs including:

  • Direct line manage1ment and supervision of the finance team;
  • Reporting all key monthly financial information to the SMT and Trustee Board including understanding of all key variances, risks and opportunities;
  • Leading the annual financial budget setting including preparation and presentation to SMT and trustee Board of detailed annual budget proposal for all service areas, central costs and fundraising;
  • Managing the annual statutory financial reporting process including preparation of financial statements in readiness for both approval by the Trustee Board and managing the audit process including all necessary preparation, dealing with audit queries and finalizing matters;
  • Providing the services and fundraising teams with the information they need to understand the financial status of their respective areas including undertaking additional ad hoc projects to support as necessary [for example pricing, contract tenders, fundraising trust fund applications or reports].
  • Continuously identifying and managing financial risk including putting in place monitoring where necessary, for example with respect to cash flow forecasting and credit control.
  • Ensuring appropriate financial policies are in place to manage risk and that they are consistently applied;
  • Ensure that all statutory filing responsibilities with respect to Companies House, Charities Commission and HMRC are managed and dealt with in a timely way including filing of annual financial statements and all necessary annual returns;
  • Management of investments and assets;
  • Manage governance processes for the board of trustees, working with the CEO to deliver governance administration on behalf of the board; such as trustee recruitment and other best practice requirements

To manage the charity's support services including:

  • Working with the CEO to support the charity's HR function including support to the HR Officer as required with their HR responsibilities, providing support with adhoc staffing issues, providing finance support as needed with recruitment and other support for staff related benefits;
  • Ensuring that the charity is adequately insured and that pension processes are managed including management of the annual insurance renewal process for buildings, liabilities and staff benefits;
  • Management of IT and Communications resources and services - manage the delivery of IT resources across the organization by working with the Head of Services to ensure that IT, software and communications systems are safe, appropriate, working efficiently and cost effective;
  • Direct line management and supervision of reception / administration team to ensure that services are supported in the best way possible

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Recognized post graduate accounting qualification (e.g. ICAEW, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent)
  • or relevant accounting management experience at a senior level
  • Excellent communication and written skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to build good, strong relationships
  • Strong leadership abilities including motivating of and management of varied teams
  • Previous Charity accounting working experience
