Job Description
  • Lead, develop and mentor a high performing finance team ensuring that the staff structure is efficient, and that staff are appropriately recruited, trained, developed and appraised;
  • Ensure a business partner approach exists across the finance team, enabling the team to understand and support key activities;
  • Establish strong relationships across the 'Heads’ senior management group, to fully understand and influence the wider business activities and flow down to the team in a proactive manner;
  • Provide support for the Director of Finance and Operations and the rest of the Directorate as required;
  • Develop and maintain proactive and effective operational relationships with the banks, auditors, investment managers, system providers, and key suppliers;
  • Manage all aspects of the budget and forecast planning, ensuring that financial plans and budgets accurately reflect strategic priorities, and that key drivers and variables are well understood and appropriately stress tested;
  • Prepare regular monitoring and forecast reports as required for secured grants;
  • Oversee the preparation statutory financial statements, liaising with external auditors in connection with the annual audit and ensuring audit queries are satisfactorily resolved;
  • Manage the maintenance of appropriate records ensuring timely completion of statutory and tax returns including VAT, gift aid, Charity commission and Companies 
  • Oversee an effective payroll function in line with internal procedures ensuring all payroll and pension related tasks are completed monthly;
  • Manage the working capital, preparing cash flow forecasts to ensure that the organisation can meet its financial obligations;
  • Negotiate with key financial advisers such as bankers, investment advisers, tax advisers and auditors in the best interests of the museum;
  • Review and maintenance of financial controls, systems and processes, including balance sheet reconciliations, implementing efficiency improvements and updating technology as required.
  • Ability to provide strategic and/or finance support on ad hoc business projects;
  • Utilize and reallocate work to enable the finance team to support any project work, developing their skills in the process.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Understanding of fundraising applications and finance requirements of such applications
  • Experience of capital project work
  • Charity specific tax knowledge
  • ACA qualified or equivalent (strongly preferred), or CIMA or ACCA qualified or equivalent
  • Strong leadership and management experience of finance teams
  • Experience in delivering robust financial controls and statutory financial reporting
  • Cash flow management and reporting expertise
  • Strategic financial planning and business planning experience
  • Experience of managing processes relating to tax, VAT and payroll
  • The ability to communicate confidently with Committee members, senior staff and non-finance staff
  • Strong influencing and partnering skills, with the ability to build effective business relationships
  • Demonstrates a commercial approach and is an effective negotiator
  • Ability to manage stakeholder expectations, priorities workloads and deliver to deadlines
  • An excellent delegator and team motivator
