Job Description

Responsibilities will include:

Operational

  • Responsibility for establishing a precedent bank of, and thereafter maintaining, company accounting policies using established financial regimes such as GAAP as an appropriate reference point.
  • Assisting the Managing Director set budgets / predicting future trends and monitoring performance throughout the financial year.
  • Providing and interpreting financial data, including but not limited to monthly board packs (profit and loss / balance sheet / budget performance and financial forecasting) and attending Operations Executive meetings.
  • Researching external and internal factors impacting on business financial performance
  • Analysis of competitors, industry benchmarks and trends.
  • Assessing cost-reduction opportunities and ensuring value in our supply agreements.
  • Assisting with the formulation of short-term and long-term business planning.
  • Researching and making grant applications, where appropriate. Familiarity with R&D credits beneficial.
  • Assessing financial performance using our analytics software and reporting to the Directors.
  • Supporting the management team with ad hoc operational tasks and bringing your commercial acumen to the running of the business.
  • Taking the lead on seeking out funding and investment opportunities.
  • Keeping abreast of changes in financial regulation and legislation.

Hands on financial management

  • Liaising with and closely managing and auditing our external bookkeeping contractor, ensuring accounts are up to date and fully reconciled, with supplier invoices and bills catalogued. Whilst we utilize contractors – you should be familiar with bookkeeping duties and have the ability and willingness to step in / audit and correct entries as required.
  • Management and oversight of outsourced payroll (Inc. keeping staff personal financial information up to date and using time ledgers / absence reports for payroll purposes)
  • Validating and processing staff expenses claims.
  • Developing and managing external relationships with appropriate other contacts, e.g. solicitors, debt collection agencies, external accountants, bankers and statutory organizations such as HMRC.
  • Making day-to-day company payments to suppliers and contractors via Bank line, and recording in QuickBooks Online (accounts payable).
  • Producing calculations for FCA reporting obligations and returns.
  • General responsibility for all HMRC matters including VAT returns, filing, payment, corporation tax.

Team leadership

  • Direct line management of our accounts receivable team (3 staff) ensuring cash flow is managed to KPIs.
  • Mentorship.

Competencies

1. Strong numeracy, ability to analyze data and attention to detail.

2. Experience of a similar finance role within an SME.

3. Experience in the claims, legal or consumer finance sector (or comparable).

4. CIMA or ACCA part qualified or AAT qualified.

5. Experience of VAT, Corporation Tax and year end accounts.

6. Experience of payroll and PAYE.

7. Experience of QuickBooks Online desirable.

8. Excellent IT literacy – inclusive of Microsoft Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

9. Proven ability to lead and mentor.

10. Experience of working in an FCA / SRA regulated company advantageous (but not essential).

11. Experience of being a part of a Management Team.

12. Experience of creating reports in Excel (such as reconciliations and budget reporting) where required.

13. Excellent communication skills.

14. Track record of identifying and implementing change.
