Job Description
Role Purpose:
- The Construction Manager will report to the Project Manager/ Programme manager and take responsibility for managing all aspects of construction. Whilst the role is specifically for a Rail Construction Manager the successful candidate will be expected to work across all disciplines, as required by the Project.
- Application of knowledge and experience gained across a range of railway disciplines.
What you'll be doing
You will have the following accountabilities:
Safety:
- Approval and implementation of Project Quality Plans, Safety Plans, Work Package Plans, ITP’s and Tool Box Talks.
- Ensure that no excavations take place without the direct approval of the Project Manager.
- Deliver the contract safely, fostering a positive safety culture.
- Lead team to deliver world class safety performance – average 1 close call every 300 man hours, 0 LTIR, 0 RIDDORs, 2 x PGI / Safety Tours per person per month.
- Lead by example to effectively support the company Safety Behavioural Programme including implementation of safety initiatives.
Delivery:
- Accountable for the safe delivery, execution and financial performance to agreed budget and / or approved forecasts.
- Ensure that systems and processes are implemented to meet Project requirements, including Quality Plans, Design Trackers and ITP’s.
- Ensure that works are planned against agreed budgets and accurate cost plans are produced and reported against on a weekly basis.
Client:
- Develop and maintain excellent client relationships by effective and timely communication (i.e. shift reports), produced in a timely manner.
- Work collaboratively with the client and Designers to identify any design issues.
Commercial:
- Ensure all elements of work are delivered to the agreed budget, ensuring that all activities are carried out in accordance with legal, client and company requirements, policies and instructions.
- Ensure that no work is delivered unless agreed.
Reporting:
- Attendance at weekly PDR & construction meetings
- Ensure that all project milestones are updated on a weekly basis in to P6.
- Ensure that site records are produced and adequacy of which reviewed on a monthly basis, to include site diaries, plant, labour, material returns and change records as minimum.
- Contribute to the production and maintenance of the Project Risk logs (Think Risk) identifying mitigation measures to minimise potential impact.
- Proactively support the audit and compliance programme, and timely completion of issues arising.
- Ensure that monthly project audits are completed to measure compliance to Group Minimum Operational Standards, and action plan implemented to address findings in a timely manner.
Procurement:
- Effective management of our subcontractors and suppliers ensuring compliance to all contractual and safety requirements.
- Ensuring weekly reports are submitted to the central Procurement function
People:
- Development of Engineering Graduate on this job
- Support & encourage the Supervisor Development Programme
Promotion of BB Brand:
- Proactively and effectively support the ‘Build to Last’ Business Improvement Programme and other initiatives such as ‘My Contribution’
- Utilisation of BB internal services where appropriate
- On-going development of a Woking Case Study, showcasing Rails Systems capability.
- Provide periodic updates on Yammer.
- Assist the Project Manager in identifying and applying for at least 1 industry award.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Extensive knowledge and practical experience in Rail Construction techniques and processes Proven experience in delivering Rail Systems schemes Personal Track Safety SMSTS Trained / Making Safety Personal 1 IT skills essential – word, excel and power point, email and internet Excellent communication & people skills – managing sub-contractor Represent BB in a professional manner, ensuring that own behaviour and behaviour of others is consistent and aligned to the Corporate Values Ability to work under pressure, remaining focused and professional Ability to positively influence others to achieve set objectives and targets Work collaboratively and effectively with others to achieve aligned outcomes.
