The role would be based in our London labs and will include some site work in London, the UK and occasionally overseas.
The Metallurgy Department has two main arms: classic metallurgy including identification and characterisation of client samples, weld qualification, failure investigations and mechanical testing; as well as soft-body impact, pull-out and barrier testing that is performed either on site or in our laboratory. For the latter we often develop custom rigs to enable the testing according to the client requirements. We principally work in the construction field so carbon steels and cast irons are our bread and butter, but we are also regularly consulted on stainless steels and copper alloy issues.
In addition to the main work of the department, the Laboratory Manager will undertake more complex consultancy work such as failure analysis, which may lead to Expert Witness activities. You will be responsible for managing a small team as well as developing the strategy for the department in line with the aims of the Partnership as a whole.
We work with high profile projects and clients which are many and varied. At one time we may have tunnel linings, samples from a 100 year old property and a boiler failure, not to mention rebar and a soft body impact test on some window units.
Salary is competitive and will be based on experience. After the first full year’s employment, a twice-yearly bonus may be paid (dependent on the firm’s performance). You will also be enrolled in the Sandberg pension scheme.
You will be passionate about metallurgy and keen to lead and develop the department. Though you’ll be one of our metallurgy experts, you shouldn’t be afraid to get your hands dirty and may occasionally have to be involved in sample preparation or mucking in with the day to day work if things get busy.
