Job Description

This role is to work as part of our expanding Building Structures team, taking a lead role in project work, focused on production, delivery, client and stakeholder liaison. You will have the opportunity to work on one of the most exciting and prestigious projects in the world. WSP are currently involved in numerous projects which will reshape London.

A typical week would include:

  • Senior Engineer with good knowledge and experience with Eurocodes and other Codes of Practice.
  • Must be competent in the design of steel and concrete medium rise construction (rail experience preferable) with complex design integration with other design team disciplines.
  • Development of design solutions responding to the challenges of inter-disciplinary co-ordination and response to team-wide issues.
  • Able to liaise directly with other design discipline members and contractor team members.
  • Hands on exposure to detailed design, preparing calculations and reports, analysis and design using engineering software, checking drawings and preparing mark-ups and sketches for CAD technicians.
  • Must have excellent communications skills both written and verbal, and be able to work with minimum guidance/supervision. Will be required to attend design workshops and liaise with external architects and engineers.
  • Preferred Software: ETABS, SAP 2000, Ram Structural System, Ram Concept, TEDDS, Autodesk BridgeDesigner
  • Takes responsibility for undertaking the delivery of technical design elements with limited guidance and supervision for a range of projects of varying scale including the preparation, checking and submission of a range of client deliverables;
  • Organises design reviews at key project stages;
  • Demonstrate experience of the role of hazard and risk assessments in avoiding or mitigating the potential risks posed by both construction materials and construction activities to site personnel, building users and the general public.
  • Demonstrates experience of management and should have developed leadership skills through the programming and control of appropriate resources in the delivery of a range of projects of varying scale;
  • Ensures that any issues with potential to impact on programme and / or scope are identified and communicated internally;
  • Shares knowledge learnt during the delivery of projects to improve discipline efficiency and productivity;
  • Demonstrates experience of the mentoring of at least one Graduate Engineers or Technicians.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Will have preferably achieved ‘Chartered Engineer’ status, or as a minimum, will have all required attributes signed off and will be in the final preparations for ‘Chartered’ Review with a recognised professional Institution; If progressed through the ‘Apprentice route’ will have achieved ‘Incorporated Engineer’ status, or, as a minimum will be ‘EngTech’ qualified with a recognised Institution; Demonstrates effective communication and inter-personal skills using written, oral and visual media. Demonstrates ability in writing letters/emails, summaries and reports, both factual and interpretative. Able to prepare and deliver presentations, project précis or design concepts, etc. Has developed drawing and sketching skills to be able to produce drawings to illustrate concept appraisals, feasibility studies and final design details. Demonstrates an appreciation of the skills of other professionals in the construction team and demonstrate an ability to work as an effective member of a diverse team. Demonstrates competence in conceiving approximate scheme solutions to assess the viability of alternative materials and forms of construction. With limited supervision and guidance can solve structural engineering problems using a variety of suitable methods of analysis and media, including both traditional methods, using hand calculations, and computer analysis using proprietary software. Demonstrates an understanding of the limitations of such techniques. Demonstrates the ability to use appropriate standards/Codes of Practice, specifications, internal publications, technical agency publications, bulletins, reports, commercial and relevant publications from other professional institutions, etc., and apply the requirements or recommendations of these documents on their projects. Demonstrates the ability to develop or review specifications, e.g. materials and workmanship specifications, project briefs, method statements. Demonstrates knowledge of the properties and behaviour of the primary construction materials, i.e. steel, concrete, masonry and timber, such that they can determine the advantages and disadvantages of the use of these materials and should understand the principles of material selection. Demonstrates knowledge of the relevant environmental and sustainability objectives, issues and legislation, and their influence on the design process and solutions adopted.
