Job Description

You will play a key role in supporting the international tax affairs of the Standard Life Aberdeen PLC (“SLA”) business and be responsible for:

  • Supporting the provision of a comprehensive international tax advisory service to the business
  • Supporting the provision of tax advice to the business on legal and operating structure reorganizations, and any alterations to the finance or capital structures of group entities
  • Supporting the provision of transfer pricing advice and support, including the effective implementation of, and reporting under, transfer pricing policy across the international group
  • Preparation of international tax risk guidance, including residence and permanent establishment
  • Maintaining and communicating knowledge of past, present and potential changes to international tax and regulatory rules, and considering potential impacts on the business.
  • The effective management of external advisors
  • Contributing to an effective risk and controls framework for international taxes for the business

You will work in close partnership with the business to ensure all international tax advisory matters are addressed effectively.

You will be required to develop a good understanding of how the business operates and work with a wide range of other business areas across a range of territories to ensure that international tax affairs are effectively managed across the organization. The role will also require the individual to develop strong working relationships with advisors and other external suppliers. You should be comfortable with developing an understanding of a range of direct and indirect taxes that may impact the business.

Key Outcomes / Responsibilities:

  • Provide a comprehensive international tax advisory service to the SLA business in the UK and overseas
  • Provide tax support to organic and inorganic activity
  • Provide tax support on business growth and change initiatives, coordinating external advisors as necessary
  • Assist the business in understanding the tax impact and requirements for set up and growth in overseas jurisdictions and monitor the activities of existing operations to ensure that all overseas tax requirements are met
  • Work with other members of the tax team to ensure that the tax effects of business changes are factored into ongoing tax compliance and business processes
  • Assist in the ongoing review and development of global transfer pricing policies to reflect any business and legislative changes
  • Production of transfer pricing documentation and support
  • Coordinate key business partners to build consensus and encourage engagement in transfer pricing process across the wider business
  • Manage international tax authority and audit enquiries
  • Keep up to date with relevant UK and overseas taxation changes and advise business areas of any implications that may arise, partnering as appropriate with peers globally to ensure that enterprise-wide solutions are sought
  • Develop thorough understanding of SLA business operations to ensure that all relevant tax issues are identified
  • Coordinate and ensure effective management of tax advisors and other external inputs
  • Work closely with other tax colleagues in the wider SLA Group to ensure tax issues relevant to other business areas in the group are understood and considered as part of the above activities
  • Work with key partners to ensure that both ongoing needs and ad hoc requests are met in a timely and appropriate manner
  • Understand best practice and ensure industry representation for SLA as appropriate with external partners, including applicable industry bodies

Strong corporate tax background with substantial exposure to international tax issues preferred. Experience in financial services or dealing with large corporate groups an advantage.
