Job Description

To be successful you’ll need to understand energy procurement as well as energy trading and risk management. We also manage business water procurement in the UK, so an understanding of this would be desirable, but not essential. Customers will need to be at the heart of your strategy and as result you’ll need to be able to build strong relationships, both with customers and internal teams.

You will be future focused, enabling the teams to shape the vision in both long-term and medium-term timescales. You’ll also work alongside innovative suppliers to develop leading edge services, whilst having the commercial acumen to realize the impact of everything the teams do.

There’s a great team in place and you’ll be here to guide and coach them through the next stage of our growth, whilst championing the already brilliant work of the teams.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Attracting, hiring & retaining top talent through positive mentoring, performance management, collaboration, empowerment, delegation and coaching to grow a best-of-class team in an agile, lean and fast paced environment.
  • Leading both the procurement and trading and risk management teams to deliver best in class seamless utility buying services. Through an optimistic, infectious, everything is possible attitude that delivers excellent customer experience.
  • Accountable for ensuring we meet and exceed our customer goals of purchasing utilities (gas, electricity and water) at the best unit rates that meets their strategy, and with the least impact on the planet.
  • Translate clients’ energy procurement needs into concrete strategies, plans and actions. Develop short and long term utility procurement & trading strategies that meet and exceed their business goals, whilst providing customers with simple, self-serve tracking and monitoring systems.
  • Work with your teams, product management, customers and market analysis to set an industry leading strategy that drives continual improvement and evolution of our offerings. To become the market leaders for utility procurement and trading, which embraces new industry innovations.
  • Design, develop and Implement our international procurement and trading capabilities to enable us to manage energy and carbon across the globe.
  • Successfully manage relationships with key suppliers to drive value for money, improve service, report and manage KPI’s and receive/share knowledge. Meeting each of them a minimum quarterly and monthly for the main providers.
  • Drive a data driven organisation by ensuring key data in and out of procurement and trading is made available efficiently through company systems. Whilst ensuring we continually add to our data sets to enable timely, accurate, and complete energy market intelligence.
  • Accountable for the pro-active management of energy cost risks for all amber customer to budgets, targets and limits, providing alerts when actions are required and liaise with customers and the head of trading and risk management to ensure that approved trading strategy and risk management policy is being applied effectively and in accordance with client trading agreements and expectations.
  • Represent the teams at a senior level, ensuring their views and opinions are captured and championed through the business.
  • Coach team members to drive improvements and efficiencies with a focus on continual improvement and technology automation to improve quality in purchasing, tendering, and trading and customer interaction.
  • Identifying and reporting all process failures or near misses and ensuring that actions are taken to minimize the risk of recurrence
  • Own and develop all internal and 3rd party business systems and processes associated with the operation of our trading and procurement activities
  • Implement world class procurement capabilities including RFP tenders, market assessment, risk management, strategy development, contract negotiation, contract management, and product management which document and record all actions, including maintaining evidence pack to justify all purchases and no purchases to safeguard audits.
  • Ensure superb customer service is delivered, making each client feel unique, happy and special by exceeding their expectations
  • Successfully project manage competing and intricate client demands, liaise with energy suppliers and adhere to high quality standards, often to tight deadlines
  • Develop and maintain a suite of dashboards and reports that reflect performance and exceptions. Owning escalation and resolution of items on the risk registers
  • Influence key stakeholders to shape the company product/service strategy by identifying future requirements to enable the company vision.
  • Accountable for the Trading Risk Policies, ensuring these evolve to meet changing market conditions and risks and ensuring that activities remain fully compliant with the agreed policy at all times
  • Act as point of escalation and resolution for complaints / issues identified by internal and external stakeholders, ensure processes are improved to avoid further occurrences.
  • Present analysis to customers from time to time, using various forums including client/prospect meetings, webinars, and third-party conferences as appropriate ensuring complex data can be interpreted easily

You are an established people leader with proven success, especially in relation to retention, staff development and succession planning in a fast paced and/or changing environment. Possesses vision and is able to develop complex strategies and solutions that meet both the demands of the next 6months and the next 3-5 years. Demonstrates a contagious 'can do' attitude, results driven through collaborative leadership, coaching/mentoring, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Significant experience of leading analytical teams with a proven track record for strong performance in core activities while also delivering development projects and business improvements. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to executives and non-technical leaders. Ensuring all commas is positive and solution focused. Extensive and deep industry experience (either an energy consulting business or licensed energy supplier) relating to wholesale energy procurement, trading and risk management within the UK supply sector, coupled with proven management skills required to lead this high profile and high value area of the business. The ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects requiring frequent communication, organization, time management, and problem-solving skills. Strong interpersonal and social skills with an ability to create clear recommendations, respond quickly and act decisively. Strong team player: builds relationships and consults with others, quickly establishes trust and credibility. Highly numerate with sound mathematical aptitude, financial modelling, analytical skills and exceptional attention to detail. Commercial awareness to support prioritization, innovation and communication at a senior level. The knowledge to be a recognized Energy Industry expert with comprehensive understanding of how the industry functions and the drivers of wholesale energy costs, regulation, legislation and risks for suppliers. Diplomatic and challenging with the ability to influence others. Strong decision maker who gives assurance and is able to use own initiative in dealing with complex operational challenges and continual improvement. Experience in managing wholesale energy procurement and trading internationally. Experience in risk modelling and management, strategy setting and portfolio optimization. Experience leading the development of automated tools to track and manage contract performance, including supplier or third-party management software. Degree level educated in relevant subject (economics, finance, math, statistics or risk management). Membership of the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS).
