Job Description

Our work is vitally important to the NHS. We collect thousands of blood donations every day in order to provide a constant supply to hospitals. Alongside this we also manage the Organ Donor Register and British Bone Marrow Registry. Each year, our work enables many people’s lives to be saved or dramatically improved by an organ or cornea transplant. We retrieve and store other tissue, like skin and bone, ready for use in life-saving and life-improving situations, and also manufacture and provide plasma products such as clotting agents.

Would you like to use your communication skills where they will make a real difference to the lives of thousands of people every year? Then come and provide the vital back-up we need behind the scenes here at NHS Blood and Transplant.

You will recruit, maintain and manage donors to maximise donor loyalty and provide a comprehensive administration service. Your varied tasks will range from organising the unit diary, updating and maintaining records, liaising with contractors, managing staff training and ordering new equipment and consumables. The role will involve contact with a wide range of health professionals and other agencies as well as regular telephone contact, and face to face contact, with members of the public whilst running a busy Reception desk.

To join the team, you’ll need experience of managing a busy office in a service or people-focused environment, maintaining electronic and paper-based records and processing documentation. All round administration skills with a good grasp of Microsoft Office, Spreadsheets and Databases. With excellent organisational and prioritising skills, you should be a relationship-builder with a positive, flexible approach to your work.

You will be working on a shift basis but we’ll let you know around two months in advance which days and hours you’ll be working. The normal hours are up to 75 hours per fortnight. The earliest start time would be 07:45 with the latest finish time of 20:00. Weekend and bank holiday working will be required. You can expect to work some long hours, but you won’t be working more than five days a week or even the same days each week. Part time applications may be considered.

Please be aware that a disclosure certificate from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) will be requested in the event of a successful application for this role, however we would like to state that a criminal record will not necessarily be a bar to obtaining employment within the organisation.

This vacancy will close at 23.59 on Friday 18th September with interviews anticipated to take place on Thursday 1st October or Friday 2nd October subject to confirmation.

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) offers a dynamic and friendly working environment where teamwork is highly valued. Personal development is also considered a priority and is supported through extensive training and development opportunities open to all employees.

We’re an inclusive organisation that reflects the diverse communities we work with and positively encourage applications from all sectors of the community.

Three small words, one big difference - Caring, Expert and Quality.

Together we'll save and improve more lives than ever
