Job Description

To monitor and create documentation to support findings for all works (Mechanical / Electrical / Civil) across the BAE Barrow Site Redevelopment Programme, ranging from refurbishment to new build, as well as infrastructure upgrade and demolition to ensure adherence to specifications and quality.

The Clerk of Works reports to the Construction Manager both for delivery and functionally.

Responsibilities:

  • Visiting construction sites/buildings across the programme to check, monitor and document the quality of build progress to ensure that Contractors are adhering to the design and specification as construction progresses, ensuring and documenting that corrective action takes place.
  • Assist in the resolution of technical issues and design queries as they arise.
  • Attending team and site meetings as required by the Construction Manager.
  • Offering up comments, solutions and alternatives to the design teams.
  • Coordinating and arranging service and utility isolations.
  • Close liaison with members of the Site safety (SHE), facilities and maintenance teams.
  • Assisting the NEC Supervisor in the compilation of defect lists and progressing their completion to a satisfactory conclusion.
  • Agree locations of site compounds with the relevant stakeholders and assist with arrangements for site services.
  • Keeping a watching brief over contractors while working with permits to excavate in the location of high voltage cables, gas mains and other sensitive services and utilities.
  • Monitoring feasibility project testing trials, ground investigations, surveys etc.
  • Monitoring the testing and commissioning of the installed equipment on behalf of the NEC Supervisor.
  • Undertaking end of stage and or post occupancy evaluations with the project team and users.
  • Work with other members of Integrated Project Team, Projects and Sub-contractors to promote a positive health and safety culture, improve performance, meet targets and contribute to learning from experience.
  • Ensure delivery of Safety, Quality, Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) performance in accordance with the requirements of BAE Barrow Site Redevelopment Programme and BAE Submarine Systems policy and management systems within all areas of this role’s responsibility.

Accountabilities:

  • Functional responsibility to the Construction Manager.
  • Delivery responsibility to the Construction Manager.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
SC clearance or the ability to attain it. UK national. Barrow 40 hours a week, 5 days a week. T&S will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Good communication skills and ability to negotiate and influence others including building and maintaining effective relationships with multiple stakeholders. Degree qualified or relevant experience (civil / mechanical / marine/ construction, in particular). Experience of modern construction management techniques within complex, multifunctional organization’s and sites. Knowledge and understanding of construction processes involved in planning and strategy; organization and governance; personnel and professional matters. Knowledge and experience of CDM Regulations, Construction Health and Safety Regulations, liaison with Principal Contractors. Experience of working with the Principal Contractor ensuring safety is controlled and managed adequately throughout construction. Hold at least one of the following H&S certifications: Site Managers Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS). IOSH Managing safely. Membership of a relevant professional body. Knowledge of UK Health and Safety Legislation, information concerning specific company safety, quality and security procedures shall be provided in-post. Experience of working on complex nuclear infrastructure projects. Experience of defense (infrastructure) projects. Construction Management competence is desirable from Membership of a relevant professional body where Construction Management Competence and Experience is a criteria for qualification.
