Job Description

This includes the following key areas of activity: Policy relating to resource funding for research including (but not limited to):

  • Museums, Galleries and Collections Funding
  • Specialists funding for the School of Advanced Study (SAS) and the Institute of Zoology (IoZ)
  • Annual research funding allocations (working with Finance and Analysis colleagues)
  • Leading the development of evidence for the Spending Review as it relates to RE’s research funding and support the Head of Strategic Coordination representing RE on UKRI wide SR co-ordination networks.
  • Leadership/teamwork/collaboration:
  • You will lead a team with direct line management of three senior policy advisers, while managing contributions of several colleagues to the work of the team.
  • You will provide leadership to research funding delivery and development of related policy areas with oversight from the Associate Directors of Research Funding who will line manage this role
  • The role requires engagement across RE, UKRI and externally at senior levels.
  • Contribute to the senior management of the research policy directorate.
  • Develop policy relating to QR funding, including preparation for allocation of over £1bn of QR after completion of the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 exercise;
  • Working with colleagues in finance and analysis to prepare annual funding allocations;
  • Monitoring and evaluation of the first wave of E3 projects;
  • Oversight and monitoring of single year funding streams relating to Participatory Research and Enhancing Research Culture;
  • Lead the development of QR evidence gathering activity, including related communications;
  • Oversee annual monitoring of Global Challenges research Fund QR;
  • Acting as key contact point and coordinator of research elements for RE for UKRI’s spending review preparations;
  • Leadership of a team of 3 senior policy advisers;
  • Contribution to the leadership and management of the Research Directorate.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Educated to at least undergraduate degree level or equivalent
  • Experience of policy development and implementation at a senior level
  • Knowledge and understanding of the UK research and higher education policy environment
  • Strong leadership skills, experience of leading teams and line management
  • Experience of managing and delivering policy and/or funding projects, with use of appropriate tools and systems
  • Strong written communications skills, and persuasive and clear oral presentation skills
  • Ability to analyze complex information, and present clear summaries
  • Experience of gathering, analysis and presentation of evidence to inform critical decisions
  • A confident, assertive and co-operative style with an ability to deal effectively with people at all levels.
