Financial Controller

Job Description

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a leading established European-based VC Fund, to head up and manage a small high-performance Finance team. Initially reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Finance Director will be tasked with making the finance and portfolio reporting function best in class. The role may evolve over time into a broader operating role within the organisation, with the appointee becoming a key decision maker and contributor on the management team.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Overall lead for financial management and operations of the Adviser and the multiple Funds
  • Manage the Funds’ Cayman and Luxembourg-based fund administrators, including in respect of capital calls, financial reporting and audit/tax matters, investment funding and divestment, banking and regulatory matters
  • Assist with investment/corporate structuring of investments for the Funds making investments across multiple geographies & jurisdictions
  • Take responsibility for quarterly portfolio reviews with the investment team, including managing company metrics and reporting
  • Manage the Fund financial models, including portfolio summary information, management of reserve allocations, recycling, exit forecast models
  • Produce quarterly and annual Limited Partner communications and reports; reply to adhoc Limited Partner data requests
  • Assist with all financial and reporting aspects of the fundraising process, including preparation of PPM, DDQ, dataroom, investor queries etc.
  • Supervise the annual audit for each of the Adviser and the Funds. Oversee preparation of annual and quarterly valuation reports, liaising with auditors, investment team members and portfolio companies
  • Oversee the preparation and delivery of budgets, forecasts and monthly management accounts for the Adviser. Undertake active treasury management of cash balances to maximize interest, manage foreign currency and hedging where appropriate
  • Supervise all payment processes, invoicing, expenses and ensure appropriate allocation of costs
  • Manage all tax affairs of the Adviser, Oversee the preparation and submission of reports to the FCA and Companies House, and all compliance and regulatory matters
  • Coordinate board meetings for the Funds, prepare relevant materials, act as main liaison with the Fund directors
  • Manage employee remuneration, including the annual performance management process (including bonus schemes), benefits and pension administration
  • Supervise team carried interest and co-investment schemes
  • Drive the development of the IT infrastructure to fully support both the investment and reporting functions. Help implement best in class accounting and portfolio management software
  • Manage a team of 3 finance professionals, nurturing/building talent; and guiding and supporting their professional development
  • Work with management to drive operational excellence and efficiency

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
A qualified accountant with 8 years+ PE / VC experience, having operated as a Fund Controller, Financial Controller or Finance Director within a comparable investment fund Excellent communicator with a strong presence/credibility, high EQ and the ability to build high quality relationships with all stakeholders Natural leadership and people management skills, with the ability to build and nurture talent Innovative and forward-thinking with the ability to be bold and progressive and drive through changes to process and systems to achieve a best in class finance function Strong IT literacy with an interest in the use of digital and tech-enabled solutions to increase efficiency and innovation High levels of pace, determination and resilience to be able to juggle several commitments at once and succeed in a fast-paced investment business Strong growth mindset with the ambition and skills to grow with the firm A self-starter with strong judgement who is able to self-direct and work independently Agile and flexible approach with ability to adapt quickly to ever-changing requirements in a growing business Positive attitude, humble in nature Highly discrete, ethical in all matters and operates with integrity and a strong respect for diversity and inclusion
