Link Smith & Nephew website In 1856, T.J. Smith opened his family pharmacy in Hull, UK and developed a new way to refine cod liver oil. On his death 40 years later, his nephew Horatio Nelson Smith took over, giving us the second part of our name. The company grew rapidly during World War One, supplying surgical and field dressings to the armed forces. After World War One, we continued to expand in the wound care sector, inventing Elastoplast in 1928. Since then, we have continued to explore. In the 80s and 90s, we entered into the arthroscopy and sports medicine businesses. 16,000 employees and 100+ countries later, we're making more of the world's leading products and we're bringing them to more of the world.
