Job Description

We are seeking an Accountancy Assistant to work within the Financial Accounting and Tax Team at West Midlands Police. In this exciting role, you will provide support to the force Financial, Systems and Tax Accountants and will assist with reconciliations of feeder systems into the General Ledger, ensuring that the reporting of financial information is accurate.

You will also assist with year-end closedown activities supporting the production of the Statements of Accounts, helping to ensure that the accounts are produced accurately within statutory deadlines and supporting the provision of information to the external auditors.

You will help with the provision of timely, accurate and useful information to the Finance Business Partnering Team to assist their monitoring and analytical activities.

In addition, there will be opportunities to complete data returns; and to extract, review and compile financial information into different formats.

General Responsibilities

  • The completion of all activities relating to month and year end reporting.
  • The preparation of journals and reconciliations
  • Checking the integrity of data and processing code corrections as and when required.
  • To provide basic analysis of data where required on areas of pay and non-pay costs.
  • To provide support on areas of activities that cross both finance and the Shared Services function.
  • Preparation of statutory returns.
  • Support the preparation of the statutory accounts via the review of transactional data.
  • Support the budget setting process via data collection preparatory work
  • Ad hoc payments and recharges

Conditions

You will work a 36.5 hour week. There is a requirement to work flexibly at all times with regard to workloads and priorities.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Analytical and judgment skills – ability to question financial information and draw conclusions. Planning and organizational skills – ability to organize own workloads and meet the needs of the team. Excellent interpersonal skills – effective verbal and written skills. Driven to deliver with enthusiasm – highly motivated and proactive approach to working including a strong desire to meet deadlines and deliver quality work. Ability to work collaboratively to achieve shared goals – business focused and flexible when meeting operational needs and expectations. Strong focus on customer relationship skills. The post holder should be educated to GCSE standard or equivalent including Maths and English. To have started or keen to obtain a qualification in the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) or equivalent. Knowledge/Experience in the use of Excel. Experience of a General Ledger Finance system, ideally Oracle.
